Identifying Trading Card Sets and Variations
A repeatable method for identifying a card by manufacturer, year, set, number, back, and supported variation.

Start with printed evidence
Read the manufacturer, copyright year, set name, card number, and any trademark line. Then compare the front and back together. Similar front artwork can appear in base sets, updates, reprints, parallels, and later anniversary products.
Describe variations precisely
A variation should be tied to a repeatable feature such as text, border, back, image crop, finish, serial number, or production code. Do not label ordinary print defects as recognized variations without a reliable checklist.
Build the catalog record
Record manufacturer, franchise, series, year, card number, subject or character, variation, finish, and condition. Clear front-and-back photographs make later verification much easier.
